The Sioux City, Iowa community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Cory Michael “Moose” Mozak, who passed away on May 23, 2026. His death has left family members, close friends, former teammates, and the entire Siouxland hockey community grieving the loss of a man remembered for his energy, humor, and deep love for family and sport.
Born on September 28, 1984, in Sioux City, Cory built a life rooted in strong community ties and a passion for hockey that followed him from childhood into adulthood. He attended East High School before continuing his hockey journey in Helena, Montana, and later at the University of Wisconsin–Stout, where he further developed both his athletic talents and lifelong friendships.
After eventually returning home to Sioux City, Cory remained dedicated to the game that meant so much to him. Alongside his brothers, he became actively involved in coaching with Siouxland Youth Hockey and the Sioux City Metros, helping mentor and inspire young athletes throughout the community. Many former players and families remember him not only as a coach, but as a positive influence who brought enthusiasm, encouragement, and laughter to every rink he entered.
Outside of hockey, Cory worked with the family business, Mozak’s Furniture & Flooring, before later joining Shaw Industries. His career eventually brought his family to St. Louis, though Sioux City always remained close to his heart.
Those closest to Cory describe him as charismatic, funny, and unforgettable — someone whose personality could instantly brighten any room. Friends recall his ability to make people laugh even during difficult times, while loved ones speak of the loyalty and love he gave so freely to those around him.
Above all else, Cory’s greatest pride and joy in life were his three children, Kennedey, Kerrigan, and Collin. Family members shared that being a father meant everything to him, and many of the memories being shared in his honor center around the love, happiness, and devotion he showed to his children every day.
As tributes continue to pour in, many are reflecting not only on the laughter Cory brought into their lives, but also on the importance of compassion and checking in on those who may be quietly carrying heavy burdens. His passing has deeply impacted many throughout the Siouxland area, particularly among those connected to the local hockey community.
Though his loss leaves an immeasurable void, Cory Michael “Moose” Mozak’s legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched, the players he mentored, and the love he shared with family and friends.
He will be remembered always with love, gratitude, and lasting admiration. May he rest in peace.
