A tragic off-road vehicle accident at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area has resulted in the death of a 35-year-old man and serious injuries to a 13-year-old boy, according to the Coos County Sheriff’s Office. The incident, which occurred on May 24, 2026, has prompted an active investigation by local authorities into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
Emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 5:01 p.m. to the area near Railroad Hill after reports of a collision involving two dirt bike riders and a side-by-side off-road vehicle. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Hauser Fire Department, Bay Cities Ambulance, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Upon arrival, first responders found that a 35-year-old male dirt bike rider had sustained severe traumatic injuries. Due to the critical nature of his condition, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station North Bend was called in to assist with an emergency airlift. The rider was transported to Bay Area Hospital for urgent medical treatment, but despite extensive lifesaving efforts, he later died from his injuries.
A second rider, a 13-year-old boy, was also seriously injured in the crash. Authorities report that he suffered multiple broken bones and was initially transported to Bay Area Hospital before being transferred to a Portland medical facility for specialized pediatric care. His current condition has not been publicly updated.
Investigators confirmed that both dirt bike riders were wearing proper safety gear, including helmets, riding equipment, and required safety flags. The side-by-side vehicle was also equipped with appropriate safety features at the time of the incident.
According to preliminary findings, the side-by-side vehicle had been traveling south near Railroad Hill when it came to a complete stop after noticing the approaching dirt bikes. Authorities believe the riders may not have seen the stationary vehicle as they crested and jumped a dune. One rider reportedly landed directly on the side-by-side, while the second attempted to brake but collided with it head-on.
Officials have indicated that excessive speed and jumping without a spotter may have been contributing factors in the crash. Investigators are continuing to examine the scene and gather additional evidence to fully understand the sequence of events.
The Coos County Sheriff’s Office has used the incident to remind off-road enthusiasts of the importance of safety precautions, including using spotters when jumping dunes and ensuring landing zones are clear before attempting high-risk maneuvers.
The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area remains a popular destination for off-road recreation, but officials stress that accidents can occur quickly when visibility and coordination are limited in dune environments.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of the 35-year-old rider while also hoping for the recovery of the injured teenager.
